Only Bio Bay Where Swimming Is Allowed

La Parguera, Lajas

The only bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico where you can jump in and swim in the glowing water. Here's your complete guide to making it happen.

01. What Makes La Parguera Unique

La Parguera (also known as Bahía Fosforescente or Phosphorescent Bay) is located in the coastal town of La Parguera in the municipality of Lajas, on Puerto Rico's southwest coast. What sets it apart from the other two bio bays is simple: you can swim in it.

At Mosquito Bay (Vieques) and Laguna Grande (Fajardo), tours are limited to kayaking or electric boats to protect their more concentrated ecosystems. But La Parguera's open-water geography and different regulatory framework allow tour operators to let visitors jump off the boat and swim in the bioluminescent water.

The experience of being surrounded by water that lights up with your every movement — your arms, your legs, the splashes — is something profoundly magical. While the bioluminescence here is dimmer than Mosquito Bay's record-breaking glow, the immersive, full-body experience is unmatched.

02. Getting to La Parguera

From San Juan

  • Drive south on PR-52 toward Ponce, then west on PR-2 to Lajas.
  • Total drive time: approximately 2.5–3 hours.
  • Many visitors make it an overnight trip, staying in La Parguera or nearby Cabo Rojo.

From Ponce

  • Head west on PR-2 to Lajas, then south on PR-304 to La Parguera.
  • Drive time: approximately 45 minutes–1 hour.
  • Ponce makes a great base for exploring the southwest coast.

Pro tip: A rental car is essential. There's no reliable public transit to La Parguera. Plan to arrive before sunset to enjoy the town's waterfront restaurants before your bio bay tour.

03. Best Time to Visit

Moon phase is the single most important factor for a great bio bay experience at La Parguera. Since the bioluminescence here is naturally dimmer than at Mosquito Bay, visiting on the darkest possible night makes an even bigger difference.

  • Critical: Visit during the new moon phase (0–10% illumination) for the best experience. This is even more important at La Parguera than at the brighter bays.
  • Acceptable: Crescent moon phases, or nights when the moon is below the horizon during your tour.
  • Skip it: Full moon periods will make the bioluminescence nearly invisible here. If a full moon coincides with your visit, consider Mosquito Bay instead, where the higher dinoflagellate concentration can still produce a visible glow.

04. The Swimming Experience

La Parguera tours are boat-based. Here's how a typical experience unfolds:

  1. Boarding — You'll meet at the La Parguera dock area and board a motorboat or pontoon. Groups are typically small to moderate in size.
  2. The boat ride — The captain motors out into the bay, passing mangrove cays and shallow reef areas. As you move away from shore lights, the water begins to glow in the wake of the boat.
  3. Swimming time — The boat stops in the heart of the bioluminescent zone. You jump in (life jackets provided) and the water ignites around you. Wave your arms, kick your feet, splash — every movement produces light.
  4. Return — After 20–40 minutes of swimming, you climb back aboard and the boat returns to dock.

The water is warm year-round (typically 78–84°F), making nighttime swimming very comfortable.

06. Nearby Attractions on the Southwest Coast

Puerto Rico's southwest coast is rich with natural beauty. Combine your La Parguera bio bay visit with these nearby attractions:

  • Cabo Rojo Salt Flats (Salinas de Cabo Rojo) — Stunning pink-hued salt flats with a boardwalk trail. One of the most photographed landscapes in Puerto Rico.
  • Playa Sucia (La Playuela) — Consistently rated one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico. Turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, and a lighthouse overlook.
  • Los Morrillos Lighthouse — A historic lighthouse perched on limestone cliffs at the southwestern tip of the island, offering panoramic ocean views.
  • Guánica Dry Forest (Bosque Seco de Guánica) — A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with unique dry tropical forest trails and coastal bird-watching opportunities.
  • Gilligan's Island (Cayo Aurora) — A small mangrove cay off the Guánica coast with shallow, crystal-clear water perfect for snorkeling and wading.

07. Conservation Efforts

La Parguera's bioluminescence has dimmed over the years due to light pollution from the town and nearby development. Conservation groups and local authorities are working to address this:

  • Efforts to reduce shoreline light pollution with amber or shielded lighting
  • Water quality monitoring to track dinoflagellate populations
  • Environmental education programs for local businesses and tour operators
  • Mangrove restoration projects to maintain the bay's nutrient ecosystem

As a visitor, you can help by choosing eco-certified tour operators, avoiding chemical products in the water, and supporting local conservation initiatives.
